Everyday approximately 22 veteran suicides occur with many of them using or having used mind altering psychiatric medications, prescribed for residual effects of combat stress, such as PTSD.

Unfortunately, for well over a decade, the military and VA has had a policy of treating combat related stress problems with psychiatric medications, which have a host of Black Box side effects, including suicide, homicide, anger, hostility, poor judgment, etc.

Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) is a normal human reaction to what can be considered abnormal situations. The 'D' (Disorder) is added to PTS when the soldier or veteran can't return to normal functioning.

In this tell all book, Dr. Billings chronicles the VA & the Military’s decision to use brain/mind altering medications for residual effects of combat stress, why they do it, the effects on veterans/soldiers, and how new integrative treatment programs are now helping military veterans return to normal, healthy lives, without brain/mind altering psychiatric medications.

Leading the call for a more intelligent, more effective and humane treatment is Bart P. Billings, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, retired enlisted soldier, and Medical Service Corps officer (USA retired - 34 yrs.). He has successfully treated hundreds of soldiers with combat stress reactions and PTSD without psychiatric medications.

Dr. Billings is also the Director/Founder of the International Military & Civilian Combat Stress Conference, the longest running conference of its type in the world and developer of the “Human Assistance Rapid Response Team (HARRT)”readiness program, which helps soldiers and their families prepare for the stress and challenges of deployment. The HARRT readiness questionnaire is included in this book.

This book is a must read for anyone who knows or treats those with combat stress related problems, such as, PTS, PTSD, or TBI.

Praise for Invisible Scars

“If we had read your book about the dangers of the drugs that the VA gave our son to treat PTSD, I am positive that he would be alive today. The cocktail of drugs given our son killed him. Since his death, we have been on a mission to help other veterans obtain drug free treatments for PTSD.”

Stan and Shirley White (Marine Corps parents)

“As much as we may wish for an elixir of drugs that could magically heal mental health disorders, there is none. And the side effects are often much worse than the cure. Dr. Billings has done yeoman service by underscoring this reality, as well as the grim dangers that result when we rely on psychoactive drugs as a curative. We owe him a thank you!"

David Brahms, Esq., B. Gen. USMC (Ret.)

This book is a must read for anyone taking antidepressant drugs. Dr. Bart Billings explains in detail the real dangers of SSRI drugs such as Paxil, Zoloft and Prozac. This is not a problem confined to the military. Are antidepressant drugs causing suicidal and homicidal behavior in thousands of people every year including children? These known side effects are listed right on the side of the box. The questions that are never asked or discussed on the news after a child shoots up his school is: "Was this person taking antidepressant drugs?" Many times the answer is yes.

These drugs are major profit makers for the pharmaceutical industry.
It's time to put the lives of men, women and children above corporate profits. It's time to take a closer look at these dangerous and deadly prescription drugs.

it makes a great case for non giving healthy soliders mind altering drugs. it stunned me that the millitary was doing that. How can they be alert and defend themselves if their brains are a mess? He does major promos fr his conference. He should give more detail about how exacty the treatment process works. He needs to give more detail about the exact ways treatments are done , . Many people ( not just millitary) can use this book if it had more details. People could get this book from the library and help themselves.
This Book Saved My Life.

I am a Firefighter with over 34 years on the job and incurred a head injury at a fire approximately 16 years prior. After a considerable amount of time off from the job I was able to return. There were certainly some deficits, but I recovered enough jump back in. I was thankful. Early on in my treatment phase, I was prescribed an antidepressant medicine because I could not sleep. The lack of sleep led to depression. My sleep initially improved but the root cause was never really addressed.

Fast forward 14 years and I found myself trying to fix a subtely imploding life. The symptoms from the head injury were getting worse and caused more stress which made it all worse.... I could not reason my way out of the situation I was in and I was tired of the struggle. I could not solve it. I was unable to make it better even though I had seen several therapists over the years.

I met Dr. Billings, read his book and took charge of my life again. I cannot thank him enough for his insight, experience and dedication to the truth and "what's right".
A much needed re-evaluation of the horror of giving our troops massive doses of psychiatric drugs by a 20 year Army MD. This book presents a viable alternative for our military and veterans, bypassing the deadly side effects of these drugs which has raised our military suicide rate to the highest in history. A must read for all active duty military, veterans and their families.
I am a disabled veteran who suffers from TBI and PTSD and I am being treated at the VA in San Diego. Your book finally sheds light on the tragic deaths related to veterans suicides locally and nationally. I hope you continue investigative reporting on this issue until it is formally addressed by military leaders, the VA and the U.S. Congress.

As you know, the VA is very short on funds to carry out a comprehensive psychological treatment plan for vets suffering from PTSD and TBI. I have been treated at the VA for years and have not made much progress concerning psychological therapy. The staffing is very shorthanded, so each time a veteran is evaluated, they are prescribed anti-depressants as the main course of action, then they are handed off to a student who studies psychology at UCSD Medical School. So, basically, it is a training ground for students studying to be doctors and it provides no real continuity for the vet as students rotate often. So, the vet is left with starting back at ground zero when another "student" therapist rotates in. The new student has to be brought up to speed on the years since I have experienced TBI. I have informed the VA that I have been trying to get qualified psychological support for years. I give up...

I have begun a new program of therapy with friend who is a doctor from our Catholic Church in San Diego. Dr. Bart Billings is a Doctor of Psychology who treats patients with profound and compassionate counseling without medication. I met Dr. Billings at our Church Men's Group and began counseling with him when my young bride passed away from cancer. I have two young daughters to raise, so this is a critical time in my life. Dr. Billings has been more helpful in a year than the many years spent at the VA.

Dr. Billings has recently written a book "Invisible Scars" that I suggest you read as it would provide more valuable insight into how best to solve this complex issue. It's working for me.
Simply outstanding! A very well written book that covers the what, why & how...
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an all to real problem that plagues many of our Service men and women. Unfortunately this issue can't be corrected with prescriptions alone, there simply isn't that "quick-fix" that we as a nation have come to look for. The drugs that have been prescribed in the recent past to treat this disorder are proven to have both mind and personality altering tendencies - exactly the opposite of what is needed to get the patient back to the main-stream life! That sad truth is that we've simply become out-of-step in dealing with these types of disorders.
A must read for those who really want to understand the entirety of the PTSD issue...
